End of season pizza party

We had a great dinner on Saturday with about 14 folks. For those who couldn't attend (and for those not listening to me when I said it Saturday), I wanted to express my thanks for being such a great team this season. I have fun whether we win or lose, but it was nice to see the progression of the team over the last several seasons.

We bid a fond farewell to Rebecca, who cannot rejoin us in the spring after her major injury this season.

For everyone else, I'll be in touch again come springtime. If you want to stay involved, we have VA indoor ongoing, upcoming MD indoor, there are pickup games on saturdays and a few happy hours here and there to keep the Sisters' spirit going.

Have a happy and health holiday season and looking forward to seeing people come spring!

We won!

Sorry this is not a longer post but has been a long week and our last game is already upon us. But we did win last weekend. It was a great day for soccer and we managed a 2-0 win. Now on to the Tomatoes tomorrow.

Another...wait for it...tie!

We played on a very crisp cool day last Saturday at a new field up in Rockville against the Psychedelic Furs. It was a frustrating game as we had a ton of shots on goal that we could not covert to points. Our defense held a strong line against two good forwards and Monica saved the day with several diving catches including one at the end of the game that deserves to go down in the history books as a major feat of agility.

Next up the Killer Tomatoes back at Rosemary Hills. Our second to the last game against the team we have yet to beat this year. It was great to have so many folks out at the last game and it really makes us so much more competitive. So lets keep it up with great attendance against the Tomatoes.

We missed our new teammate, Monica, who is out for a bit with a tear to her hamstring. We hope to have her back before the end of the season.

A Draw

We had a draw on Saturday against the First Ladies up at Rosemary Hills. It was a 0-0 duel of the sweepers as Ali put it. It was rough going so early in the morning but we had a great turn out and played hard. Our forwards had some great shots and we easily out shot them but could not covert them into goals. Wish I had something more exciting to say about the game...not our best and not our worst showing. We have another opportunity to beat them in our final game of the season.

17 folks turned up at Parkway Deli for breakfast afterwards. I have never seen my kids devour that many pancakes.

Next week we are up against the Furs in Rockville at a new field.

A Little Motivation

In case anyone is looking for motivation for Saturday's 8:45am game against the First Ladies just go check out the Over-30 Division Standings. We are in 4th place with 3 wins and 3 losses. This is the same record as the Smash but we had one additional goal scored against us so we trail them. It is also just 4 goals behind the Femmes who tied the Tomatoes.

We have an good opportunity to win against the Ladies so come out, lace up and kick the ball!

Rough Loss

We suffered a rough 3-1 loss on Saturday against the Femmes. We had NO subs for the game and actually started short one player. We all cheered when Monica showed up late and took her place in the front line.

The goals were good ones from the Femmes. On defense we often forget that Anika can score from much further away then most other players. Monica scored for us which was a real boost of moral but we could not convert any of our other shots on goal.

We got pushed down to 4th place in the standings after this loss but it is a very tight race with just 1 win and 1 point separating us from 2nd place. We can easily regain our spot and even have a chance at first if we can beat the Killer Fruit in our second to the last game.

Next week we play the First Ladies, our first game against them this season, at 8:30am at Rosemary Hills. Make sure to work up an appetite so we can head over to Parkway Deli afterwards.

Shout out to Jenn who was injured but came to the game and took the photos posted above. Hopefully she will be back for the next game.

A Win!

We scored another win today against the Psychedelic Furs. It was a great day at Rosemary Hills but boy what a crappy field. The first half was scoreless and we struggled to read their defense. But we got it together in the second half with shorter passes to the outside that brought us in close to the goal.

Sharon scored first on an awesome left footed shot from the left corner. The Furs answered with a quick goal and we were tied for much of the second half. But we had the ball in front of their goal alot and Tina followed a corner kick and set up Kathy to score. Everyone got back on defense and we held them to a 2-1 win.

We joked with our new teammates about our past losing seasons. If they had only know before they joined us:) But we are really coming together as a team. Now if we can get just a few more subs on the sidelines. Huge thanks to Daniel for serving as our sub master. It went alot smoother then previous games.

Next week we play the Femmes once again at the Hills dustbowl. Anyone up for lunch at Parkway Deli afterwards? I have a craving for a pastrami sandwich and those great pickles from the pickle bar.

What a game!

Our trend came to an end this last weekend against the Killer Tomatoes. What a game we played. We were at Turkey Thicket on that rough field in the middle of the day in the lovely heat. The 2-0 loss does not reflect how hard we played. We were light years better then we were last season. It was like playing with a different team.

It was a rough and tumble game. I hit the ground hard in the first half and it took a bit for me to get the dazed look off my face. Kia also hit the ground a few times as she made some amazing runs to the goal. But we could not break through their defense and their offense had us running hard. We have another chance to get a win against them later in the season.

Indoor ended with a playoff game that went down 3-13. It was a tough loss without many subs. As Amanda said it was a great opportunity to work on the things they had wanted to all season. Amanda and Carrie both played in goal and folks got alot of chances to pass and improve their ball handling skills.

We are knee deep in our outdoor season but I strongly urge folks to check out the Washington Freedom clinics over the winter break. I did one last winter and felt a huge boost in my confidence if not my skills:)

A Great Day for Soccer

Saturday was a great day for soccer. The temperature was just right and the sun was shining. The wind was a bit much but luckily Monica's strong punts overcame the resistance.

We took on the Smash again at Rosemary Hills. We scored early with kicks from Kathy with a great return on her deflected corner kick and Jenn's first ever goal. Smash had some really good shots on our goal but only managed to sink 1. We won 2-1 and are in second place behind the Killer Tomatoes. This is definitely a trend.

One Smash player asked if we had been practicing over the summer. i explained our push of Saturday scrimmages, summer league and indoor. She said...It really shows in your play. You guys are talking to each other which is great. So big cheer for all the folks who came out over the summer.

We did not fare so well in indoor and fell 12-2 in our last game of the regular indoor season. I have never felt that ineffective on defense in my life. Next Sunday is our playoff game which ends the season.

So looking forward to next Saturday at Turkey Thicket against the Killer Tomatoes.

A Great Start to the New Season

So I had no response to my request for a writer to summarize our first game. The quick and dirty is all folks get...we lost to Smash in our season opener.

BUT the big news is we won our first game this past Saturday against the Violent Femmes. It was a 3-1 win in the late summer heat at the Rosemary Hills dust bowl. We played a fast paced and very offensive game driven by the energy of several new players and the strong improvements from team veterans who have worked hard in the off season at practices and indoor. I have to admit I was so surprised by our first goal that I let my guard down on defense and the Femmes quickly scored an answering goal. We had to remind ourselves on defense to stay strong and focused after our next two goals. These three goals match the total number of goals scored by our team in our first two seasons.

It was also a long weekend of soccer for the indoor Sister's team. We had a double header out in Fairfax. We won 11-5 in our first game but an hour later lost 6-3. It was rough on everyone having to play 3 games in one weekend. At one point I had no energy left and just had to sit it out sucking down Gatorade.

We are back to the Smash again this coming weekend at Rosemary Hills. This may prove to be our lucky field.

A special shout out to Rebecca who suffered a broken tibia in our Femmes game. She is out for the season. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope to see her back next season.

Calling all soccer divas

The Twisted Sisters are gearing up for another season of WAWSL over-30 soccer. Our team is semi competitive and a good mix of all skill levels. We are looking for new players with either soccer experience (high school and above) or who are in good shape.

If you are a mom this is a great opportunity to get out with your kids on the weekend, spend time with other women and show the kids that mom can play to. If you are not a mom this is a great place to socialize, get some exercise and hang out with a great group of women.

The Fall 2007 season starts on Aug 25th and lasts for 10 weeks. We play on Saturdays.

We have a morning practice next Saturday at Lincoln Field, near to the monuments.

Our league is WAWSL - www.wawsl.org. If you check out the site you can see all the fields we play throughout DC and just over into Maryland.

If you are interested contact our team co-captain - Monica at MHubal_at_cnmcresearch.org

A Twisted Storm

Last night was our first indoor game at the very hot Fairfax Sportsplex. We had 10 players turn out which was great since we were all a little rusty. The substitutions were flying fast and furious. At one point Alli exhorted us all to play all out and remember we have a deep bench. We played very hard!

We went down scoring 4-7 against the Storm who were last seasons best team. At one point Jenn mentioned we held them scoreless for 16 minutes. That is alot in a fast moving indoor game.

Several new players were on the field for the first time and they did a great job moving the ball around the field. It is essential to get some of the kinks and jitters out of our system before we play outdoor later this month.

New clinic for women in Fairfax

I thought this new clinic at our indoor venue might be of interest to some folks. Looks like it is geared towards stay at home moms but if a group of 10 got together they could introduce a new

This winter, the Sportsplex is offering a low impact, instructional program introducing soccer fundamentals to women with little or no playing experience. This is an ideal progrma in particular for women who have children playing soccer and who want to acquaint themselves with the sport. Our instruction is designed to create comfort playing with a ball at the feet, as well as to teach the principles of soccer technique including dribbling, passing, and shooting.

Classes: Monday, 10-11 am - January 23. 30, February 6, 13, 27, March 6, 13
Cost for seven-week program: $35, payable on the first day of class

Practices 8/11 and 8/17

So.... we have 3 weeks until fall ball begins so lets commence some serious practicing!

Full team practices on sat 8/11 and sat 8/17 leading up to the start of the season. To be fair, lets practice in DC.

8/11 will be at the field near Teresa's house in NW.
The field is located at 11th and Irving Street NW - just 2 blocks from the Columbia Heights metro on the green line. Getting on to the field is easy - come to the fence on the 11th street side of the field and we will help folks slide under the chain link.

8/18 will be at lincoln fields.

To beat the heat and get a jump on dc traffic - practices will begin at 9:30.

Remember to recruit all the elite forwards you can find over the next few weeks! :)

Nearest metro is forest glen - but a bit of a hike.

We played there last Sat and had the place to ourselves. Be sure to bring cletes - flats can be a little slippary.

For the VA crowd - this is an easy exit from the beltway - a mile north on 29 from the beltway - easy on/easy off :) Much easier parking than downtown!

Final game

I just realized that I have not posted a recap of the final game of the season. It was great soccer weather to take on the Femmes. We played on the Catholic Univ. turf field and made great use of a nice field.

I really feel this was our best game of the season. Although we were missing a few key folks we mixed up the line up a bit and really took it to them. I have never seen the ball spend so much time at the other end of the field. Our forwards really came together and made more shots on goal in this one game then I think we have seen all season. The mid fielders provided great support and really opened the field up. Defense was strong and the goals they scored were really quite amazing shots.

Afterwards one of our opponents came up to me and said how much they thought we had improved, that none of their team can believe it is only our second season together and how they know to watch out for us in the Fall.

Now if we can just get some fancy uniforms like they have then I think we can make a run for at least a .500 season!

Short recap just to have one

Not that this is news to anyone on a Friday before our last game but I did want to quickly recap a loss from last Saturday against the Furs. From what I have heard it was a tight game, they had a very strong sweeper and we went down fighting 1-0.

More Summer Soccer Fun

So Monica did a great job rounding up all the opportunities to keep playing soccer over the summer. I posted them all here with some extra info.

1) Last game is Saturday June 16th at Catholic University's turf field.

2) Sheila sent around a note about Monday night pick up game with some of her work colleagues and friends. They play at at 6:30 p.m. in Stead Park on P between 16th and 17th streets NW. It's a good idea to bring a ball because it's hard to know who will show up from week to week. This is a low key, co-ed pick up game. Be in touch with her directly if you want to know more.

3) There are still slots for players to play with another team in the Freedom Cup on July 14th. Contact Monica if you want to know more.

4) On July 28th is the Hoy Keg Cup. Monica will be gone but we really should think about putting together a team to play in this. We have until July 2nd to decide. For more on the cup go to http://tinyurl.com/2fqmop

5) We will try and scrimmage over the summer likely on Saturdays around 10:30am. This is a great chance to work on our team work, passing, dribbling and just overall take our games up a notch. One sure fire way to avoid another winless season! Monica will send out announcements about these from week to week.

6) Saturday, June 30th will be the first Saturday scrimmage affectionately called the Parkway Deli scrimmage at a field near the Deli. If enough folks are interested the scrimmage would be at 10:30 followed by lunch at the Deli.

7) And last but not least another season of Indoor in Fairfax at the Fairfax sportsplex. This has been great fun, built team cohesion and helped us get into better shape. Games are on Sundays starting in the late afternoon to evening. Talk to Amanda if you are interested.

Could we win just one game?

Ok so I know we are playing for fun, making new friends, enjoying some great exercise but it would be really great to win from time to time as well. We are overdue!

So no we did not win on Saturday. The field was awesome, we had the first game which meant we did not get heat stroke and we put together a great forward configuration that spent 80% of their time in front of the Smash goal. We lost 3-0 but it was not for lack of trying or for lack of shots on their goal. We just could not quite get the ball into the back of the net.

No worries though because we are really coming together as a team, folks are getting more comfortable in their positions, we are all getting into better shape. A win cannot be far off.

Just a reminder...when we play on turf it can be more comfortable to play in regular sports shoes and not cleats. I felt like I was standing on burning rubber at times.

Next up...an early morning at Lincoln Field against the Furs.

Another great soccer weekend

The weather cooperated this weekend for a glorious soccer day on Saturday at the Trinity field. What a difference it makes to play on a well kept field. Boy was it a big expanse to play on.

So we lost to the Tomatoes 4-0 but it was a much better game then the season opener. We played a 2 4 4 1 configuration and it actually worked out quite well with alot more support to the two forwards. Tina and Allie both had scoring opportunities that we could not quite convert into goals. I subbed for Monica in the goal for the last 10 minutes. Brought back alot of memories from my 8 years of playing goalie as a kid. On Sunday my body reminded me why attempts at diving saves should be an exception and not the norm.

Next outdoor is against the Smash down at Lincoln Field. Don't forget that is Race for the Cure day so leave plenty of time to get to the field. Metro is your best bet since the streets will be closed. Hope to get Sheila, Leola and Ann back soon.

Saturday was the season closer for indoor. From Amanda:
We won our last game of indoor against the Sakhermoms 13-7. We finished the season 5-3. They played down a person the whole game and in the second half we went 4 v 4. Naela and Jen were big scorers. We are taking a season off but will play again in the fall if any other Sisters want to sign up.

Nice to have two weeks off but look forward to a scrimmage on Memorial Day and then a BBQ bash at my house.

It's getting hot in here

I probably should save the title of this post for later in the season but did anyone notice how warm it was on Saturday? Mid day game, nice wide field, not much shade...it got a bit warm out there.
We lost 2-0 against the Femmes. It was a good, solid game and we all played well. Our offense continued to improve with more scoring opportunities and alot more time with the ball in front of our opponents goal.
Defense had some tough moments with the Furs strong forwards but we were able to keep their top scorers to just a few shots. But we still are not putting together strong combinations that get us points. Plenty more work to do.
A shout out to Kathy for taking a monster hit to the face and then coming back to head the ball later in the game.
We had fun bonding after the game at Colonel Brooks Tavern, a Brookland institution. Beer was a bit pricey but the burgers and fries were good.
Next week we get a chance to really pick up our game against the Killer Tomatoes at Trinity's great outdoor field.

Tough Loss

It was a tough loss for the Twisted Team today. We really gave the First Ladies a run for their money but lost 2-0. Bad weather held off although we did play through some lovely showers early on. We held them scoreless in the first half with some great defense. It was rough shutting down their great forwards.
Our front line excelled with alot of time in front of the Ladies' goal. But shots could not find their way into the net. The Ladies had one really amazing goal but the second one snuck past us.
It was fun playing down by the monuments with tons of tourists strolling by. Too bad the field was so awful.
Great game. Sorry Sheila had to miss it to get married. We wish her a huge congratulations!
Next week we play the Femmes at Turkey Thicket.

What a weekend!

Lots of hard work this weekend with a tough loss to the Furs on Saturday. We scored early with an amazing blast from Janet that I heard was quite a sight to see. But it was not enough to win and we lost 2-1. But we are well on our way to a much better showing this season and improvements come each game. Sorry to miss the game and the fun pub afterwards.

It was an amazing showing for the indoor sisters. We beat the Crush 12-1 with every player scoring except our intrepid goalie Monica. They seemed to be working with some new players and their goalie sure got a work out with all our shots on goal. With 10 minutes left to play I went in for Monica and had a few harrowing moments in goal.

Next Saturday we play the First Ladies again. If anyone is up for indoor let Amanda know as me, Jen and Monica cannot play on Sunday.

You win some...you lose some

It was a great soccer weekend for the Twisted Sisters. We are really coming together as a team. And even managing to learn our teammates names thanks to a great twisted social outing at the Red Dog Cafe after our Saturday game! My kids had fun trying to pick out 'mommy' from the mass of purple shirted women. Major props to Kathy and Monica for the early morning flight from Massachusetts to make the game against the Smash.

We lost 2-0 after two really early goals at the Rosemary Hills field. But we held them scoreless in the second half and really concentrated on bringing the ball to them. It was a hard loss but we all played hard.

Sunday night was a great indoor game in Fairfax. We won 6-5 against the Psychedelic Furs indoor squad. We will be carrying over that enthusiasm and focus to our next outdoor game against the Furs on Saturday. Janet was recruited by a coed team and stayed on to play another game. We all were in awe of her commitment!

Crushed by the Killer Tomatoes

Just to recap for those folks who missed the game... we had a challenging time against the Killer Tomatoes last Saturday. We lost 6-0. It was a combo of missing some key players, a slow start to the season and a good passing game from the Tomatoes that got through our defenses.

Despite the loss it was great to have Sharon back, we added a new player, Meghan and Rebecca played her first game with us. And at least two more women were not scared off by the loss and should be back to play with us this coming weekend against the Furs.

Team building continues!

Our weekend games

Saturday we played our first Spring 07 game against the First Ladies. It was a good game and we held our own against their talented forwards. We ultimately lost 2-0. We are currently in 5th place out of 6. It was a great introduction for all of us to a few new players on the team - Ellie, Erica and Tina.

On Sunday we played another indoor game in Fairfax against Second Wind. It was a shut out and we won 6-0. The Wind had a very vocal cheering section but we tuned them out and focused on making their goalie work very hard.

Next up is an outdoor game against the Violent Femmes at Catholic Univ.

Schedules

I have posted below game schedules for the spring. Outdoor and indoor are included for those of us crazy enough to play both. Practices will be announced on an ongoing basis - if we settle on a routine practice time, I'll add them to the calendar.

Here's what I ask -

1) Let me know if I made any errors against the master schedules

2) Please leave a comment for any month in which there are games you know you will not attend. Gives me a heads up on attendance. For example, I will leave a comment that I cannot make the game on June 2.

Thanks and GAME ON! :)

Indoor Soccer: 18 March vs Green Machine

Although we lost the game 6-1, it wasn't without a lot of heart. Naela scored our only goal.
The "luck of the Irish" wasn't with us due to illness (Monica), injury (Cathy--in her Friday indoor league); household emergency (Jennifer and Teresa); and family matters (Janet). So we had no subs. Then, Leola sprained her ankle during the second half. The Green Machine was nice enough to offer us some subs to finish the game.
Props to Carrie for goalie coverage in the second half--making up for my errors (including an own goal) in goal the first half.

Twisted Indoor

The Twisted Sister indoor team went 3-4 for the winter season. We won over "White Lightning" to secure sixth place out of nine teams-- not bad for our first indoor season.

It is an interesting place to play and defnitely forces us to use muscles we do not normally use on the outdoor fields. Amanda has signed us up for another outdoor season so if you want to play send her an email.

Games are played at the Fairfax Sportsplex in VA. Can be some late game times but it is a great way to stay connected in the off season and get that heart rate up another day of the week. The new season runs from March 4, 2007 - April 29, 2007.

Practice Sat March 17

We will practice "same time same place" this coming saturday. See map below. For those there last sat - we will try to get space where we practiced last time. For new folks - go past Ohio Dr/W Basin - we will be about 1/2 way between the intersection and the entrance to the FDR memorial on your left. We may be on the far side of the field - call me if you are lost - 413-230-0077.

10:30 am - sat march 17th.

Looking for a few good sisters

Well, with the weather turning colder…its time to think (at least momentarily) about spring soccer season. The Twisted Sisters are recruiting new players for the season.

We will likely start outdoor practices in early March. Weekend late mornings to begin with until it stays light later. Spring games are supposed to begin weekend of March 31-April 1. The season typically lasts 10 weeks.

The only requirement to play is you must be a woman and over 30 years old.

If you are interested in playing with the Twisted Sisters during our Spring 2007 season then click here and visit our team page and e-mail one of our Managers - Kathy or Monica.

Our League - WAWSL

Thought I would start the Twisted Sisters blog off with a shout out to our league. WAWSL (Washington Area Women's Soccer LEague) and especially Eric Hoy helped to bring us all together in Fall 2006. We were the new team on the block last season and had 2 wins and 7 losses.
